Vandal leaves broken glass, graffiti on Cape Coral Church

CAPE CORAL, Florida – Somebody destroyed Waters Edge Church in Cape Coral and now members must pick up the pieces.

Splinters of glass and graffiti remained in the parking lot.

“We are broken people who help other broken people,” said Pastor Donald Neace. “So when this happens in the church, where the only intention is to help, it is just an insult.”

Neace said the community was trying to give the neighborhood kids a place to play, but vandals threw stones at the basketball nets and left derogatory messages.

“It’s just very hurtful that someone has that attitude,” said Neace.

Osmani Valdes, a Cape Coral resident who lives near the church, has lived in the area for 17 years. During that time he said he had never seen anything like it.

“I see kids playing on the basketball hoop all the time and just for someone to come by and screw everyone up, I think it’s just awful,” Valdes said.

Neace said the vandal caused about $ 1,200 in damage. The Church filed a complaint with the police.

Neace said the church will repair the back wall and other damage.
