Every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., a guided tour of the Ostego Bay Foundation Marine Science Center’s working waterfront through the shrimp boat industry of Fort Myers Beach and San Carlos Island is offered.
The Ostego Bay Foundation has received the Travel Advisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award for its Working Waterfront Tour.
The program includes a tour of the active waterfront of the commercial fishing industry, including the Erickson & Jensen Supply House, the net shop and the Trico Shrimp Boat loading dock. The tour takes you to the docks to see how the boats are unloaded, the trawl doors are built, the shrimp nets are hand sewn, the seafood is dumped, and other important aspects of this unique multi-million dollar industry.
The history of the shrimp industry on San Carlos Island and Florida’s rose gold shrimp, as well as the history of Florida’s oldest and largest shrimp fishery, are discussed.
According to a research study by the University of Florida, the San Carlos Island shrimp fleet unloads more Florida pinks than anywhere else in Florida.
The tour continues with a 1-1 / 2-hour guided tour of the Marine Science Center Museum, which includes numerous hands-on exhibits, a touch tank, a beach display, and muzzle aquariums.
The tour runs every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. weather permitting. The cost is $ 20 per adult and $ 10 for children over 6 years of age. Reservations are required. Call 239-765-8101 for details or register online at http://www.ostegobay.org/waterfront-tours/
