Meet the Adventurers Who Sacrificed It All to Explore 92 Countries and Beyond!

The Martins’ Adventure: A Leap Beyond Boundaries

A married couple who were once based in Florida set their sights on traveling the world during their retirement — and they’re off and doing just that.

Bev and John Martin retired in 2020. They decided to start “small” on their travel adventures by road tripping around the United States first.

World travelers Bev and John Martin chose to give up everything to see 92 countries and counting: ‘Why not?’ Their thirst for adventure has led them on a remarkable journey, one that many dream of but few dare to pursue. They kicked off their escapade by navigating the diverse landscapes of America in an Airstream trailer, joyfully crossing off states from their bucket list.

From Florida Roots to Global Footprints

Making their mark on every state solidified their desire to explore further. The couple, who now operate a blog named Retirement Travelers, realized that their dream extended beyond the borders of the United States. So, they sold their home, donated cherished items, and made the audacious choice to embrace life on the road—an advanced journey they’d always longed for.

“We thought, ‘Why not go see the world?’” John Martin shared amusingly during an interview, suggesting that curiosity was the ultimate driver behind their decision to embark on this extraordinary journey.

Support from Family: The True North Star

Leaving behind five children and eight grandchildren is no small feat, yet the Martins report unwavering support from their family. “Our children are genuinely excited for us to live out our best lives,” Bev expressed with heartfelt sincerity. Their example speaks volumes: a life defined not by possessions but by experiences and connections.

For this couple, the mantra “items don’t matter” resonates deeply. They left behind their comfortable Florida lifestyle, yet held onto their golf clubs—a humorous nod to their interests that reminds them of home. Living minimally allows a more profound connection not only with the world but also with each other, making each moment a shared treasure.

Experiencing the World’s Wonders

At ages 60 and 61, the Martins ventured far beyond their previous constraints. Their escapades include vibrant stints in Morocco, the breathtaking landscapes of Indonesia, and the bustling streets of Thailand. Countries visited also include Australia, Croatia, and even the stunning shores of Costa Rica and Guatemala. Each stop is a postcard in their story, with a blend of adventure and introspection.

Matins in Vietnam

They usually spend four to seven days in each new location, cherishing the time to explore but also the opportunity to connect with strangers who often turn into dear friends. “As we age, we anticipate slowing down a bit, but for now, we’re healthy enough to embrace this fast-paced wanderlust,” they reflected on their blog, a mix of practical wisdom and hopeful aspirations.

The Joy of Discovery

While the Martins make new connections globally, they remain grounded with family ties. They journey home to visit their loved ones twice yearly, a bittersweet contrast to their adventures abroad. Visiting iconic locations like the Taj Mahal stands as a testament to their mindset, appreciating not just what’s on the surface but the stories beneath each destination.

John fondly recalls their visit to Ukraine—a land tied to family roots, where he fulfilled a dream that his grandfather was never able to realize. “Crossing that border and feeling the connection was incredible,” he mused, capturing the essence of not just travel, but lineage and legacy.

Finding Solace in Simplicity

Unexpected adventures also await, like their enchanting time at Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. Often regarded as a safety risk, they found the people to be gracious, reinforcing their belief that the world is far more welcoming than perceived. “Home-cooked meals? That’s what we miss the most,” John added with a chuckle. “Cracker Barrel’s veggie platter and sweet tea? That’s comfort right there.”

As they reminisce about the familiar “Sweetie” they receive from waitresses in their southern haunt, one realizes how the joys of life often lie in the simple moments—both at home and abroad. No matter how far they roam, this longing for connection remains a thread that weaves their story together, reminding them of who they are.

This journey is more than mere exploration; it’s an invitation to reflect and a testament to what it means to live in the present. The Martins embody a profound lesson: life is about the experiences we create, the boundaries we break, and the memories that we gather along the way. For them, the pursuit of happiness isn’t defined by physical possessions, but rather by the heartfelt connections forged across 92 countries and counting.
