A rural region in Spain is paying remote workers $16,000 to relocate and conduct business in a rolling green valley, just under three hours from Madrid.
And it’s not the only country offering workers and entrepreneurs money to move — the list of countries seeking “digital nomads” is growing.
Recently, the Regional Government of Extremadura unveiled its appealing “Live in Ambroz” initiative, specifically developed to lure remote workers. This program presents an opportunity for individuals to receive grants of approximately $16,620, incentivizing them to settle and work in the picturesque region for a minimum of two years.
Prithwiraj Choudhury, a distinguished professor at Harvard Business School, has explored the nuances of remote work and innovation for many years. With a keen understanding of shifting economic dynamics, he highlights how perceptions have changed regarding where talent congregates. “Many economists thought that talent would all flock to the megacities and that megacities were the future of the world,” Choudhury noted. Yet, his insight reflects a palpable shift. Today, individuals are discovering the freedom to choose where they reside, especially when remote work is an option. As life becomes more flexible, various communities emerge as potential new hubs for innovation and creativity.
The people embodying this shift — with a blend of entrepreneurial spirit and wanderlust — are known as digital nomads.
The pandemic has ushered in a new era where remote workers establish a symbiotic relationship with nations offering attractive living conditions. Many are seeking a charming locale, and Ambroz Valley showcases rolling hills, verdant pastures, and quaint villages. However, the appeal runs deeper than the aesthetic; it’s a chance to forge new connections in a tranquil environment.
Yet, the backdrop of “Empty Spain” looms large. The largest village, Hervás, has a mere 3,907 inhabitants, and some areas struggle with populations of fewer than 200. The “Live in Ambroz” program aims to counteract this trend, fostering a thriving community by cultivating connections between newcomers and locals.
One of the principal goals is to counteract the persistent decline in rural populations and services threatening these areas. “The obvious benefits to the community are that when digital nomads come and spend time in that community, they spend consumption dollars,” Choudhury articulated. Yet, he notes, it’s not just about the money. The potential for knowledge exchange and entrepreneurial collaboration is invaluable, giving rise to innovative possibilities.
For digital nomads, moving is often both practical and transformative. Dave Williams, an entrepreneur from Atlanta, encapsulates this balance perfectly. “Geo arbitrage is a significant factor,” he reflects. “You could relocate to a place with a lower cost of living, maintain your income, and enjoy substantial savings.” He and his wife embraced this lifestyle change in 2017, moving to Portugal and founding NomadX, a venture that connects remote workers with supportive communities. This innovative approach nurtures not only local economies but also human connections.
Before the pandemic, remote work options were scarce—only Estonia and Barbados offered specific visas. However, this has changed dramatically. Today, over 60 countries offer similar incentives, fostering a workforce ready to explore new cultures and contexts.
The Ambroz Valley program will provide grants for up to 200 digital nomads, covering essentials from housing to arable land, all intended to facilitate their assimilation. Interested candidates must secure Spain’s digital nomad visa and official residency prior to applying. This venture aims to breathe life back into rural areas, inviting diverse perspectives and financial support.
Other countries, such as Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, and Chile, have developed similar programs. Chile’s long-standing Start-Up Chile initiative offers entrepreneurs a year-long visa alongside $20,000 in equity-free capital. These efforts signify the growing recognition of remote workers as agents of economic rejuvenation.
Reflecting on his journey, Williams acknowledges the transformative power of becoming a digital nomad. “Relocations spark innovation and help break through stagnation,” he mused. Familiar comforts fade, replaced by connections with diverse communities that foster support and solidarity. “People may come from different backgrounds, yet the underlying camaraderie among individuals shines through,” he remarked, revealing a deeper truth about humanity’s intrinsic need for connection.
