In the heart of Naples, Florida, a sanctuary has sprung up amidst the towering rents—a new apartment complex welcomes seniors seeking solace. The Ekos Allegro, a fresh undertaking by McDowell Housing Partners, caters specifically to those aged 62 and older, bridging the gap in affordable housing for the elderly population. With hurricane-proof construction and modern amenities that seem almost luxurious, this complex plans to offer a total of 160 units, creating a reprieve for those living on fixed incomes.
“I feel so fortunate and lucky. I’m speechless, the place is beautiful,” Daniel Mullins shared, his eyes reflecting a newfound joy.

Just a few months prior, Mullins faced the stark reality of homelessness, a veteran of the Vietnam War and a survivor of life’s unpredictable twists. “I was in military intelligence, and I was in Vietnam from ’69 to ’72,” he recalled, his voice carrying the weight of memories. Selling his trailer in a desperate effort to cover living expenses had led him down a long, difficult path. “We stayed with a friend for like 30 days,” Mullins reminisced, the discomfort of uncertainty lingering in the air.
His journey through temporary shelters and the kindness of friends culminated in the day he secured a spot at Ekos Allegro, largely thanks to connections made with the Collier Housing Alliance. Now, Mullins proudly resides in a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment that costs him $1,014 each month. “It’s gorgeous, and we’re so fortunate and so happy. We love all of it,” he expressed, the relief palpable in his tone.
Originally set to open its doors next year, the complex was completed ahead of schedule, a testament to the effort put forth by community leaders like Michael Puchalla of the Housing Alliance. With a $1.3 million loan from the Collier Community Foundation, dreams quickly transformed into reality. “It’s been a long process, certainly, but we’re very, very excited that the county really stepped up,” Puchalla remarked, pride punctuating his voice.
Ekos Allegro stands out as one of the few fixed-income senior housing options in Naples, a safe haven crafted with meticulous attention to safety standards. “There is no sparing of costs,” Puchalla assured. “It is up to your Miami Category 5 hurricane standards. It’s a solid concrete block five-story building. There’s no wood frame structure—it’s solid block.”
For many seniors, securing affordable housing can seem like an insurmountable challenge. With rent prices soaring from $477 to $1,280 per month, the need for such developments is more crucial than ever—a fact underscored by Mullins’ story of resilience. Walking through the vibrant halls now filled with laughter and companionship, one can’t help but feel the warmth radiating from a community reborn.
