MARCO ISLAND, Fla. — Marco Island’s food pantry, Our Daily Bread, is in the process of converting an old bank building into its new permanent space on San Marco Road. This change marks a significant milestone for a nonprofit that has dedicated nearly ten years to battling hunger in Collier County.
The pantry, which will occupy a 5,000-square-foot establishment at 1818 San Marco Road, has been a lifeline for the community since 2016. Operating out of a local church, they have distributed thousands of meals each week, ensuring that families do not go without food.
“We realized the necessity for a permanent home,” shared Executive Director Evelyn Rossetti-Ryan. “We’ve been growing at a rate of 20% each year, which means a dedicated space was essential for our mission.”

Acquiring the building last year for over $3 million was a pivotal step forward for Our Daily Bread. Once a Fifth Third Bank, the structure still retains features reminiscent of its banking days. “When we first acquired it, it very much resembled a bank,” Ryan recalled, memories of polished counters and spacious lobbies lingering in her thoughts. “However, we see those old features as advantages. They can be adapted for our needs.”
The renovations in progress reveal a structure crafted to facilitate the efficient receiving and distribution of food. “We will have roll-up doors for deliveries, substantial refrigeration units, and ample space for organizing our Saturday distributions,” Ryan explained, her enthusiasm palpable as she envisioned the bustling environment that would soon fill the space.
Remarkably, about 17% of the individuals served by Our Daily Bread are residents of Marco Island, while many of the remainder work on the island, particularly in the service industry. These working individuals often find themselves in need, demonstrating the ironic truth that hard work does not always shield one from hardship.
“It’s striking how many of our clients come to us after their shifts. They pick up groceries before heading to their next job or after a long day,” Ryan reflected, a slight sadness in her voice as she spoke of those who live in the shadow of luxury yet struggle to meet their most basic needs.
Every Saturday at 9 a.m., the pantry distributes food outside Family Church Marco, reaffirming the community’s bond in fighting hunger. With plans to open from their new location by summer 2024, the pantry stands ready to grow stronger, both as a resource and a beacon of hope in the community.
This transformative journey not only provides a place for food but also symbolizes the resilience of a community that believes in supporting one another. In a region known for its pristine beaches and breathtaking sunsets, it’s easy to overlook the quiet struggles that unfold daily. Yet, as Our Daily Bread evolves, it illustrates the strength found in unity, the importance of compassion, and the power of giving.
