Lehigh Senior High School’s Legacy: BJ Edwards Inspires a New Generation
The gym at Lehigh Senior High School stands as a fortress of memories and aspirations, holding a special place in BJ Edwards’ heart. Edwards reflects, “Lehigh in many ways made me who I am today. It’s not just my alma mater; it’s my foundation. I’ve been part of this community since third grade.”
A Living Tribute to Triumphs
The walls of this gym echo with the spirit of achievement. One can’t help but notice the banners, each one telling a story. Among them, the banner acknowledging the 2014 Elite Eight boys basketball team proudly waves. Edwards, the captain of that team and a celebrated athlete, received the 6A Player of the Year accolade that season, a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication.
Guiding the Lightning
Today, Edwards leads as the head coach of the Lightning, a role he embraces with purpose. As the program’s all-time leading scorer, he aims to instill the same passion in his players that once burned within him. “Being able to serve these young men is so fulfilling,” he shared. Under his leadership, the team’s performance has seen a remarkable uptrend: 16 wins in his inaugural season, 18 the following year, and now, a bold new milestone of 21 victories. This marks the first time the team has crossed the 20-win threshold in five years.
Echoes of the Past, Spirit of the Present
Edwards sees sparks of the 2014 squad in his current team, noting the remarkable similarities. “They are a group of selfless individuals,” he articulated. “These young men are doing something unique that stands out in our community.” The camaraderie they’ve built is reflected in both their performances on the court and their spirits off of it.
Setting Higher Standards
Kionus Walters, a guard on the team, articulated the weight of expectations this year. “While we’re young, we’re also ambitious. The standard is set higher for us.” The practice jerseys speak to their philosophy, emblazoned with the motto: *Just Us.* Joshua Bauer, another guard, echoed the sentiment, saying, “We are one team, one family. We embody a brotherhood.”
Focusing on the Process
Amidst the excitement, Edwards emphasizes the importance of process over results. “If we focus on the right actions—the process—success will follow. Winning will come naturally if we stay committed to doing things the right way.” This mindset forms a cornerstone of the team’s culture, shaping not just their athleticism, but their overall character.
As Edwards and his team strive towards greatness, the community watches, cheering for their success and uniting around their shared dreams. The heart of Lehigh Senior High’s basketball program beats strong, driven by a legacy that is far more than just wins and losses—it’s about growth, brotherhood, and an unwavering commitment to each other, and to their shared vision of success.
