LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. — The Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is investigating a death in a Lehigh Acres canal.

Just before 6 p.m. Tuesday night, neighbors said deputies surrounded the Able Canal, near Connecticut Road and Jefferson Drive.

NBC2 talked to a homeowner who’s lanai backs up to the canal. German Moya said he was in the pool with his family when they discovered something floating in the water about 100 feet away.

“I drove my vehicle on the road that was close to the canal and I noticed it was a body and it was facing down,” said Moya.

That’s when Moya and his wife called 911.

He said within minutes dozens of deputies showed up and pulled the body to the water’s edge.

“It was really sad to see someone in that condition,” said Moya.

We’re learning at the time of the investigation FWC was called in to deal with a nuisance alligator getting in the way of deputies.

Moya said the gator is known as “Wally” and he’s lived in the canal for years.

Although in a statement, FWC said in part “At this time, there is no reason to believe that an alligator was involved in the incident being investigated by LCSO.”

LCSO said the investigation is on-going.
