The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team had the tying run at the plate, but couldn’t complete a comeback and lost to UNF, 6-3, on Sunday at Swanson Stadium.
The Ospreys (28-15, 7-5 Atlantic Sun) took the final two games to take the series from the Eagles (20-23, 6-6).
FGCU trailed 6-1 going into the ninth, but loaded the bases with one out. An error on designated hitter Stefano Belmonte’s sharp grounder to third scored two runs. But Gage Morey struck out swinging and Jay Hayes flew out to the warning track in center field.
“There wasn’t much going for us today,” FGCU coach Dave Tollett said. “There’s not much else to say than that. Too many punchouts, and a lack of execution when we could have used it the most.”
Gulf Coast High School graduate Mario Leon (3-4) took the loss for FGCU, which is fifth in the conference. The top five teams are separated by four games.
Hayes had a solo homer in the third for FGCU’s other run. The Eagles play a three-game series at USC Upstate beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
