In a heartwarming turn of events, a Fort Myers high school senior who was the victim of a hit-and-run accident involving a drunk driver received unexpected help from another teenager who had previously experienced a similar tragedy. In this article, we will delve into the inspiring story of how a teenage survivor of a hit-and-run accident overcame her own physical and emotional struggles to give back to a fellow student in need.

Fort Myers Teen Hit by Drunk Driver Gives Back to FMHS Senior

Every year, graduating seniors from Fort Myers High School (FMHS) are honored for their academic and extracurricular achievements. The ceremony is a time for proud parents to watch their children receive accolades for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence. This year, the ceremony was made even more meaningful by the actions of one FMHS senior and a former FMHS student who was hit by a drunk driver.

The Accident

In 2015, a then-15-year-old LaShawn Daniels was walking with friends when a drunk driver struck her in a hit-and-run accident. The Fort Myers community rallied around her, raising thousands of dollars for medical expenses, and providing support for her and her family during her recovery. Through it all, LaShawn remained positive and determined to give back to the community that had shown her so much kindness.

The Scholarship

This year, LaShawn fulfilled her promise to give back by awarding a scholarship to FMHS senior Rylie Madrid. The scholarship was awarded in memory of LaShawn’s friend, Kyrstin Wann, who passed away from leukemia in 2017. Kyrstin was an accomplished athlete and student who inspired those around her with her strength and positivity. LaShawn wanted to honor her memory by giving back to a student who embodied the same spirit.

The Recipient

Rylie Madrid is a worthy recipient of the scholarship. She is an accomplished athlete who has excelled on the volleyball court and in the classroom. She plans to attend Florida Gulf Coast University to study nursing, with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner. Rylie has also been involved in the community, volunteering at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and organizing blood drives to help those in need.

The Ceremony

The ceremony was a touching tribute to the strength and resilience of the Fort Myers community. LaShawn presented the scholarship to Rylie in front of a packed auditorium of proud parents, teachers, and fellow students. The two embraced as LaShawn congratulated Rylie on her accomplishments and wished her well in her future endeavors.

The Impact

The impact of LaShawn’s scholarship extends far beyond the financial assistance it provides to Rylie. It is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of community to come together in times of need. LaShawn’s actions inspire us all to give back to our communities and to make a positive impact on those around us.

The Future

LaShawn’s future is bright. She plans to attend Florida Southwestern State College to study nursing, with the goal of becoming a registered nurse. She is grateful for the support of the Fort Myers community and is excited to give back through her future career. LaShawn’s story serves as a reminder that we can all make a difference in the lives of those around us, no matter what challenges we face.

The Lesson

The lesson of LaShawn’s story is simple: never give up hope, and always give back to the community that supports you. LaShawn’s resilience in the face of adversity has inspired us all to be stronger, more determined, and more compassionate. Her scholarship is a testament to the power of community to come together and make a positive impact on the world around us.
