Man dead in I-75 head-on crash after hitting cable barrier

Wife and child died in an accident on State Road 31 in Punta Gorda

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A 20-year-old man is dead after hitting a cable barrier in the I-75 median and crashing head-on with a vehicle in the opposite lane.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), at 10:05 p.m. the man was traveling south on I-75 near Daniels Parkway when he swerved onto the grass median and struck a cable barrier. The man collided head on with another vehicle in the northbound lane

The Palm Beach Gardens man was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the other vehicle, a 40-year-old Punta Gorda woman, was taken to the Gulf Coast Hospital in critical condition, FHP said.

This is an active investigation.
