SANIBEL, Fla. – Due to widespread flooding on Sanibel streets, the City of Sanibel is now advising motorists to stay off the roads until the rain stops and flooding subsides.

City officials said the flooding is currently occurring Island-wide.

The island saw anywhere from four to six inches of rain Sunday, and officials said residents should brace for more.

Numerous roads were underwater, even parts of the Sanibel Island Golf Club.

“The course was pretty saturated before this from the rain we have had this past week and then just overnight we’ve just gotten hammered,” said Gene Taylor with the Sanibel Island Golf Club.

City officials said Tropical Storm Sally has produced more rain than predicted.
