Less than three weeks ago, singer Chris Cornell performed with Soundgarden at Fort Rock in Fort Myers.
Cornell, 52, died Wednesday night after a concert in Detroit. An initial report from the Detroit Free Press said Cornell died with a “band around his neck.” Police were investigating the death as a possible suicide.
Cornell and Soundgarden were the headliners at Fort Rock’s Sunday lineup on April 30, capping off the two-day, 26-band music festival at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers.
Cory O’Donnell, digital engagement editor at The News-Press, attended Fort Rock and called Cornell a “musical gift” to rock.
“I’ve been a huge fan of Chris Cornell’s since his days with Soundgarden in the early 90s,” O’Donnell said. “His talent as a frontman was always well-known in those days, but seeing him live and discovering just what an incredible musician he is on stage, from guitar playing to pulling off his amazing singing performances every night.
“It really drives home just how titanic of a musical gift he was to the world of rock.”
