BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – Two Fort Myers Beach men have died after a crash on Bonita Beach Road near Downs Drive Wednesday.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 2 p.m. when a van and a box truck collided.

Troopers said one person was pronounced dead and another was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The other person was later pronounced dead as well.

The van involved in the crash was driving west on Bonita Beach Road in the left turn lane, approaching the intersection while the box truck was going east. Troopers said the van turned left while facing a posted ” Left Turn Yield on Green” sign and went right into the path of the box truck.

After the two cars slammed into each other, the van spun onto the southeast sidewalk of Downs Drive, facing north, according to FHP. The driver of the van as well as the two men, who were passengers in the vehicle, were taken to local hospitals.

Two lanes of eastbound traffic were blocked on Bonita Beach Road near the intersection.

The crash remains under investigation.
