On Saturday, March 13th, 2021, Downtown Fort Myers hosted the annual Women’s Empowerment event. With the pandemic causing cancellation of events in 2020, the return of this event brought excitement, hope, and inspiration to the community. The event, sponsored by the City of Fort Myers, was held at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, and featured a variety of vendors, speakers, and interactive activities, all in the name of empowerment for women.
The event featured two keynote speakers – Dr. Lisa M. Johnson, PhD and Tamika McFarland. Dr. Johnson is a licensed psychologist and founder of LMJ Consulting and Training, LLC. She is also an active member in the community, serving on various boards and committees, including the Horizon Council, and has received many accolades for her work. Tamika McFarland is the Founder and CEO of the Colored Girl, Inc., a safe space for young girls of color to learn, grow, and flourish. McFarland’s work has been recognized nationally, and she has been featured in various publications, podcasts, and speaking engagements.
During their speeches, both Dr. Johnson and McFarland touched on the importance of women in leadership roles, the challenges they face, and the necessity of empowering the next generation of women. They emphasized that leadership is more than just holding a title; it’s about creating a positive impact and being a role model for others. They also spoke about the many obstacles that women face, such as gender bias, imposter syndrome, and lack of support. However, they stressed that despite these challenges, women have the power to overcome and succeed, and it all starts with believing in themselves and their abilities.
The event also featured vendor booths from various local businesses and organizations. A few of the booths included:
– Girls on the Run – This organization inspires young girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident through running.
– Vintage Market 45 – This local business sells vintage and refurbished items, with a portion of their sales being donated to charity.
– Twisted Vine Bistro – This restaurant specializes in craft cocktails and globally inspired dishes.
These vendor booths provided an opportunity for attendees to learn about and support local businesses and organizations while also promoting the message of women’s empowerment.
In addition to the keynote speeches and vendor booths, the Women’s Empowerment event also featured various interactive activities. These included:
– Live music from local female artists
– A photo booth with empowering quotes and props
– A DIY flower crown station
– A self-defense demonstration from a local martial arts academy
These interactive activities provided a fun and engaging way for attendees to connect with others and learn more about being empowered as women.
Overall, the Women’s Empowerment event in Downtown Fort Myers was a success. With inspiring keynote speakers, engaging vendor booths, and interactive activities, attendees left feeling motivated and ready to make a positive impact. By promoting the message of women’s empowerment, events like these help to create a more equal and just society, where all women have the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
