Troubled retailer Sears announced Monday it would file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and close an additional 142 stores near year-end.
The Sears store in Naples – which opened in 1977 as one of the original anchors of the Coastland Center mall – won’t make it through the year.
In late August, parent Sears Holdings Corp. announced the Naples store was among 46 Sears or Kmart locations to be eliminated. It’s expected to close on Nov. 25 – a few days after Black Friday.

Coastland originally was anchored by Sears and Maas Brothers. The Maas Brothers brand went defunct in 1991 when it merged with the Burdines department store chain, which in turn merged with Macy’s in 2005.
The Sears at Edison Mall in Fort Myers has survived the latest cut.
Edison Mall’s Sears opened in 1965 – roughly a year before construction was completed for the rest of the mall.
Sears has been closing both its namesake and Kmart stores at a rapid rate. In January 2017, Sears Holdings announced plans to close its three remaining Kmart stores in Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties early that same year.
